Words by Jemilea Wisdom-Baako, Founder of Writerz and Scribez
After the death of George Floyd, my company Writerz and Scribez held a creative space called BLACK INK for black young people through spoken word workshops to find community, expression and safety during a tumultuous time. They created a joint piece which we turned into a short film. The workshops always started and ended with a wellbeing activity, and participants were offered a group session with a therapist to process their emotions. In the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, these young people reclaimed their own narratives.
As an organisation we operate in the field of Creative Health and are very passionate about representation in the sector and are currently developing training on anti-racism in Creative Health. It is important to us that underserved communities are included equitably in this space and we would like to contribute by showcasing their voices.
BLACK INK is a group poem written by Black young people after the death of George Floyd during a 6-week online workshop on poetry and wellbeing led by Writerz and Scribez. The video was recorded and directed by Jolade Olusanya.
